Overview: St Joseph Medical Center PGY1 in an Ambulatory Setting

Required rotations (First half of year)

Residency orientation/anticoagulation/hospice 4 weeks

Elective 1 (heart failure, oncology, rheumatology, or gastroenterology) 4 weeks
Elective 2 (heart failure, oncology, rheumatology, or gastroenterology) 4 weeks
Practice management 4 weeks
Acute care (ID and TOC/ED/IM) 6 weeks

Primary care - longitudinal 2 - 3 days per week
Population health 1 day every 2 weeks
Advanced elective (heart failure, oncology, rheumatology, or gastroenterology) 1 day per week

Required rotations (continuous)

Formulary management, precepting, residency project
Staffing anticoagulation clinic 2 weekdays per month
Staffing community 2 weekdays per month

Elective rotations (second half of year, one day per week for 22 weeks)

Advanced heart failure, advanced oncology, advanced rheumatology, or advanced gastroenterology
*may only choose one of the two electives taken during the first half of the year		 1 day per week for 22 weeks

Required longitudinal experience–residency project and staffing

Residents conduct a project aimed at identifying, organizing, and solving a clinical or management-related problem or developing a new program with emphasis in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy. This project MAY be presented at a regional conference for pharmacy residents, fellows, and preceptors. The resident will be encouraged to submit the project for publication and present at state or national pharmacy meetings.

Residents will be assigned to an anticoagulation clinic and community pharmacy site within the health system for further experiential development through staffing opportunities.

Stipend and benefits

Benefits include 30 days of Paid Time Off (PTO), medical, dental, and life insurance for residents and dependents. Paid educational leave and a travel allowance may be available to support attendance at state and national meetings. The current stipend is $79,934 annually/$38.43 per hour.

Additional required longitudinal experiences–continuous

Longitudinal experiences will occur throughout the residency year and encompass activities such as performing Drug Utilization Evaluations, presenting recommendations to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees, student precepting, and creating a monthly newsletter directed to all Virginia Mason Franciscan Health clinical staff. Residents will also be directly involved in the education of providers, nurses, and the care team.
