How to apply

All application materials must be forwarded to us through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Once this process has been completed, your application will be reviewed. Inquiries regarding the surgical residency program at Virginia Mason should be directed to:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025: ERAS Applications Released to Residency Program
  • Early October 2025: Holistic Application Review–We review all candidates completely. Applications received after the initial committee review will be considered on a rolling basis.
  • Oct. 22-Nov. 1, 2025: Initial Interview Invitations Sent–Interview offers will be extended to fill available slots, giving applicants a few days to respond. We do not offer more interviews than slots available. Interviews are scheduled through the ERAS system.
  • Nov. 4-Dec. 9, 2025: Interviews–See detailed interview day information below. Interviews will be conducted 100% virtually for this application cycle.
  • Wednesday, March 4, 2026: Rank List Due–Rank lists for both programs and applicants are due on this day.
  • Friday, March 20, 2026: Match Day! A day of excitement for everyone. We really look forward to welcoming you to the Virginia Mason family in July!

Interview dates & details

Interview Days: Applicants who are selected to interview with Virginia Mason will receive an invitation via ERAS. Initial interview invitations will be sent starting Oct. 22, 2025.

Preliminary Applicants:

We will be hosting two virtual informational sessions for applicants interested in our Preliminary Surgery Internship year. Our preliminary surgery year is ideal for those persons who are interested in pursuing residency in radiology, interventional radiology, anesthesia, dermatology and other specialties in which technical skills training is preferred. Interested applicants should apply through ERAS and invitations for these sessions will be sent in December.

Salary & benefits

Annual Stipends

Salary (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026)

  • PGY1 $73,728
  • PGY2 $76,268

Additional Stipends

  • Educational Stipend: Residents (PGY1-PGY8) are provided $1,000.00 per year
  • Phone: $900 per year (provided Resident agrees to applicable terms and conditions), in quarterly disbursements while employed as a Resident.
  • Meals: $3,000 per year
  • Housing: Annual Living Expense Stipend: $9,000 per year in quarterly disbursements while employed as a Resident. Residents will be responsible for securing their living quarters and transportation.
  • Relocation Assistance: Residents may receive up to $2,692.30 in reimbursable relocation assistance for the purpose of aiding in relocating to service area prior to commencing the first year of the residency/fellowship program.

Vacations

15-days are designated as vacation annually in three week-long blocks that are scheduled prior to the academic year. 

The remaining 5 days are scheduled ad-hoc and may be used for personal days, meetings/conferences, presentations, sick days,  bereavement, or  early departure for fellowship /residency training.

Malpractice Insurance

Coverage provides legal defense and protection against awards from claims reported or filed after the completion of graduate medical education. If the alleged acts or omissions of the residents are within the scope of the education program, the purchase of a tail policy is not necessary.

Meals

Meal cards are provided to each resident for purchase as described in VMFH House Staff Manual – VMMC Addendum.

Uniforms

White coats will be provided for all members of the resident staff.
