Liver cancer diagnosis

Most cases of liver cancer occur in people ages 45 and older. Liver cancer is closely associated with hepatitis virus infections, especially hepatitis B. Unfortunately, the incidence and mortality rates for these cancers have increased in all races and both sexes in the past two decades.

Tests and procedures used to diagnose liver cancer may include:

  • Blood tests to look for liver function abnormalities
  • Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, CT and MRI, to view the hepatobiliary system in more detail

Liver biopsy, in which a small sample of tissue is removed through a thin needle to test for cancer cells

Liver cancer treatment

Liver, biliary and pancreatic cancers may be complex cancers to treat, but our experienced team is here to provide you with the best care possible. The use of advanced laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery offers a less-invasive approach for many people.

In addition to surgery, your treatments for liver cancer may include:

  • Ablation to destroy liver tumors without removing them
  • Embolization therapy to block or reduce blood flow to the tumor
  • Radiation therapy to kill cancer cells
  • Targeted drug therapy that attacks cancer cells differently than standard chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy to help your immune system attack cancer cells
  • Chemotherapy
