Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (FPRS) Fellowship

Program summary

Virginia Mason's Department of Facial Plastic Surgery offers a one-year fellowship program in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery accredited by American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship (FPRS) provides hands-on training and exposure to the breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The fellowship includes a high volume, state-of-the-art service using nationally-recognized, system-based approaches to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including adult cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty, facial rejuvenation, cosmetic oculoplasty, microvascular surgery, and a large volume of reconstructive procedures.

Under the leadership and supervision of Fellowship Director Michael Nuara, MD, the fellow performs a minimum of 500 cases, with opportunities to participate as part of a multidisciplinary team in robust clinic and inpatient care.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed an ACGME or RCPSC-accredited residency in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. Our program currently participates in the SF Match Process, therefore, candidates must complete the AAFPRS Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship online application. Find more information on eligibility and how to apply.

At this time we are not accepting applications from graduates of International Medical Schools outside of the U.S., unless completed residency at U.S. residency program and have unlimited ECFMG certification.

Curriculum

The primary goal of the Fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is to give the fellow the clinical and surgical skills to excel in a otolaryngology career and serve as an ambassador for themself, the profession and Virginia Mason. Specifically, the fellowship curriculum aims to teach requisite cognitive and technical aspects of surgical facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including:

  • Understanding relevant processes, their presentation and management
  • Analysis and interpretation of radiographic data
  • Understanding the indications and contraindications for procedures
  • Pre- and post-procedure care of the patient
  • Recognition and management of complications
  • Appropriate documentation and reporting
  • Appropriate communication with the patient and the multidisciplinary team
  • Research, presentation and publication in the field

How to apply

To apply, see full details at the AAFPRS Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery webpage and submit the application with all required materials. Applications must be submitted by March 1 of the year prior to the start of fellowship training.
