Curriculum Overview - Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is based at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. As fellows, you will experience working in our 3 tertiary-care hospitals over your training period. You will also actively engage in maintaining an ambulatory clinic during your training. We have several teaching programs, including Internal Medicine Residencies and Advanced Practice Provider programs. You will be expected to actively participate in educating others during their training.

Research opportunities will be available throughout your training, and it is expected that fellows work on their research interests throughout their training. Active participation in weekly conferences, Morbidity & Mortality conferences, and Journal Clubs is expected. You will have opportunities to learn on designing efficient models of care by learning the Virginia Mason Production System model through the Virginia Mason Institute. In the end, it is expected that you will develop critical thinking and well-rounded skills to manage a wide spectrum of patients with cardiovascular disease while developing a deeper understanding of the current and future health care environment.

You will develop clinical skills in all aspects of cardiovascular care. You will have rotations in vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery to appreciate care continuity and complex decision making. You will also have the opportunity to pursue research and other electives in your 2nd and 3rd years of training. CME funds will be provided to travel to conferences and also present at society meetings.
