St. Joseph Medical Center General Surgery Residency Program

St. Joseph Medical Center, a part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, serves Tacoma and surrounding areas with the goal of creating healthier communities. In an effort to expand that mission and vision, we launched a general surgery residency program in June 2019. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or ACGME, a private, non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits graduate medical education (GME) programs.

This five-year residency program will be an opportunity to improve our community’s access to care while cultivating the next generation of talented surgeons. During this robust program, residents will work closely with attending surgeons, gaining early and progressively more advanced operative exposure throughout the residency experience. We engage the residents in a planned curriculum delivered via lectures and conferences, simulation, online course materials, at bedside and in the operating room during structured rotations.
