  • When should I see a doctor for my back pain?

It's been estimated that up to 30% of adults will have an episode of back pain lasting at least one week in a given year. If symptoms are prolonged, you'll usually see improvement with a stretching or strengthening program tailored specifically to you. Failure to improve over time, a fever, prominent pain at night, bowel or bladder changes associated with pain, or a history of cancer or immune suppression are considered "red flags" and should prompt further medical evaluation. Virginia Mason Franciscan Health offers rapid access to back specialists through our Spine Clinic. Our specialists can quickly assess your situation and get you started on the road to recovery. Please call us if your back pain is interfering with your ability to function normally for more than a day or two.
