Anorectal Manometry and Defecography

Anorectal testing, such as manometry and defecography, helps pinpoint the cause of fecal incontinence (leakage) and chronic constipation. Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is one of the few programs in the Puget Sound region offering advanced options. Our commitment to testing excellence ensures a precise diagnosis and treatments with the highest likelihood of success.

Manometry test and defecography: Why choose us?

Anorectal testing is part of our comprehensive approach to treating pelvic floor issues, some of which affect the bowels. We are one of the only programs in the Puget Sound region where you'll find colorectal surgeons with advanced training in pelvic health. They work alongside urogynecologists to deliver seamless care. You can count on us for appropriate testing and accurate results. Meet our team.

Highlights of our program include:

  • National recognition: Anorectal manometry and defecography are part of a thorough evaluation for continence issues. We use the latest evidence-based methods and hold ourselves to the highest standards. This commitment has earned some locations Center of Excellence designation from the National Association for Continence (NAFC).

  • Advanced testing: Video defecography with fluoroscopy enables us to observe real-time pelvic organ function for a level of detail that’s not possible with other methods. It aids our team in treatment planning so we can tailor services to your needs.

  • Multidisciplinary care: Colorectal surgeons work closely with other highly skilled providers to address the many factors that may be causing your symptoms. You may receive services from urogynecologists, radiologists, gynecologists, gastroenterologists and pelvic floor physical therapists.

  • Range of treatments: At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, we offer every available treatment. Many people feel better with nonsurgical treatments. Our expertise also includes surgery for pelvic floor disorders that are complex or don’t respond to standard treatment.

About anorectal testing

These studies evaluate structures that support your ability to eliminate stool. Options include:

  • Anorectal manometry: This test assesses sensation in the rectum, nerve activity and the ring of muscles (sphincter) in your anus.
  • Defecography with fluoroscopy: Real-time imaging evaluates pelvic organ and muscle activity during specific stages of a bowel movement.

Could anorectal testing be right for me?

You may need anorectal manometry or defecography with fluoroscopy if you have:

  • Chronic constipation
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Sensation that your bowels aren’t empty after going to the bathroom
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Symptoms of pelvic organ or rectal prolapse

In addition to manometry and defecography, you may need additional tests to pinpoint what’s causing your symptoms. Find out more about diagnostic testing for pelvic floor disorders.
