Cervical, Ovarian & Uterine Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment

Gynecologic cancers—commonly, cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers—affects a woman’s reproductive system and can have a serious impact on every aspect of her life. That's why treatment at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health starts with a caring and compassionate team of skilled cancer specialists who carefully develop a targeted and focused plan of treatment for each individual. 

This multidisciplinary group includes surgeons, radiologists, oncologists and other health care professionals such as nurses, dietitians, social workers and physical therapists. Women receive care from all their health care specialists in one setting, and a cancer navigator is with each person through the entirety of her treatment.

Gynecologic cancer screening and diagnosis

Our cancer specialists are board certified and fellowship trained in gynecologic oncology. Their expertise focuses on diagnosing and treating all five major types of gynecologic cancer: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. Our specialists diagnose gynecologic cancers based on your medical history, a physical exam and certain symptoms, including:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Rash, sores or warts on vulva skin

Treatment options for cervical, ovarian and uterine cancer

Our cancer specialists take a multidisciplinary team approach to treating gynecologic cancers. Experts from several specialties, including gynecologic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, care navigators and other experts, work closely together to design a personalized treatment plan specifically for your individual case, which may include one or more of the following:

  • Surgery, including minimally invasive surgery, which often means shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapies, which use antibodies that target specific molecules within cancer cells

For more than 20 years, the goal of our clinical research program has been to provide each of our patients with a research option at every step of their disease, from initial diagnosis to long-term follow-up. Wellness and rehabilitation

Your needs are continually assessed and addressed to minimize the effect of gynecologic cancer on overall health and happiness. We enhance your quality of life through an emphasis on cancer wellness and rehabilitation, including recommendations and support for sexual function, nutrition and exercise. Patients may be given referrals for massage, acupuncture and other treatments that may enhance their sense of well-being during treatment and recovery.
