20 Years of Drives & Discoveries: The Boeing Classic Tees Up for a Milestone Year

June 29, 2025

Tournament surpasses $10M raised for local charities, including Benaroya Research Institute

The Boeing Classic, a PGA TOUR Champions event, will celebrate its 20th anniversary Aug. 4-10, 2025, at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. Founded in 2005, the Boeing Classic has become a Pacific Northwest tradition, drawing spectators across the region to witness world-class golf and raise funds for life-saving research at Benaroya Research Institute, a part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

"The Boeing Classic is more than a premier golf tournament; it’s a celebration of community and a shared commitment to a healthier future," said Ketul J. Patel, CEO of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and President of CommonSpirit Health’s Pacific Northwest Region. "Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is honored to be part of this annual event, bringing world-class golf to the Pacific Northwest for 20 years while advancing innovative medical research and care for our region.”

Bringing the tournament to Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) teamed up and became co-founders of the Boeing Classic. The two organizations helped bring the golf event – originally named the Boeing Greater Seattle Classic – to the Pacific Northwest. Boeing has been the title sponsor since the tournament's inception, which continues to be one of the longest-running title sponsorships on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit.

The inaugural event was a success, attracting thousands of people and receiving rave reviews from spectators and players.

Raising funds for charity

The Boeing Classic is more than a golf tournament. The tournament benefits the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI) at VMFH. Since the beginning, the tournament has raised more than $10 million for local charities, including BRI. These funds support BRI's research into immune system diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1D), lupus, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and allergies and asthma. Funds raised have fueled research breakthroughs, including:

  • BRI researchers  published a study on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the most common form of lupus that is unlocking new possibilities for both diagnosing and treating lupus.
  • An article in the  journal Science Translational Medicine featured research led by scientists at BRI, which begins to define a healthy immune system. This understanding will help lay the groundwork to identify better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent immune system diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
  • Expanding and accelerating the ability to conduct research by growing organoids. Organoids are three-dimensional tissues, like mini organs, that allow BRI to study diseases in tissues. For example, BRI has made gut organoids to study ulcerative colitis.
  • A research study on how best to implement screening for autoimmune diseases as a part of primary care.

This year’s golf legends

The tournament will feature a field of golf legends competing for a $2.3 million purse. Stephen Ames has won the Boeing Classic two years in a row, an unprecedented occurrence. No other player has ever won the tournament back-to-back. This year, he will go for his third Boeing Classic trophy.

Other anticipated players include Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Miguel Angel Jiménez, and Bernhard Langer.

"We are excited to welcome some of the best golfers in the world for the 20th anniversary of the Boeing Classic," said Ryan Ingalls, Tournament Director. "I'm thankful for Boeing, the Seattle Seahawks and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health for bringing the community together for such a fun, beloved community event."

The fan experience

The 20th Boeing Classic will include the return of popular attractions such as the Seahawks Village, an interactive area for fans with crafts, locally-owned  food trucks, and airplane flyovers.  The family-friendly event offers activities for all ages.

  • Seahawks Village: The Seahawks Village is  an interactive football zone located near the 18th hole. The area will host Seahawk Legends for autograph sessions throughout the tournament weekend, Aug. 8-10. Activities will include family crafts, a Seahawks putting green, a lounge area overlooking the 18th green and a 20-yard dash to commemorate the 20th anniversary.
  • Boeing Classic Youth Clinic: The Boeing Classic Youth Clinic will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 12 p.m. Youth ages 6-18 are invited to participate in the clinic, receiving instruction from a PGA TOUR Champions professional and a prize pack. No golf clubs are required. The event is hosted in partnership with the First Tee of Seattle and is open to the public.

About Benaroya Research Institute (BRI)
As the primary beneficiary of the Boeing Classic, BRI uses donations to further advance cutting-edge research to predict, prevent, reverse and cure immune system diseases, like type 1 diabetes (T1D), lupus, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, and applying discoveries made in one disease to improve health for all. BRI recently played a significant role in developing a therapy to delay disease onset, for two years or more, for people at high risk of developing T1D. Now, we can definitively state that detection is feasible – and prevention is possible. BRI is actively working to apply this advancement to other autoimmune diseases. BRI is part of an integrated health system, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH), which serves the Pacific Northwest.
