Financial Assistance & Discounts

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health understands that paying for emergency and/or medically necessary medical care can be difficult, particularly for patients who lack health insurance. As part of our ongoing commitment to our patients, we work hard to help our patients address their financial responsibilities in a way that’s fair and sensitive to their circumstances. We’ve instituted a program designed specifically to help those who find themselves in financial distress.

Financial Assistance Program

The Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Financial Assistance Policy (available in multiple languages) applies to uninsured/underinsured patients who come to our facilities for treatment. This policy provides financial relief to patients who qualify based on a comparison of their financial resources and/or income to Federal Poverty Guidelines.

The program is designed specifically for emergent, urgent, and/or medically necessary care patients whose household financial resources and income are at or below 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

To qualify for any assistance, uninsured/underinsured patients will be asked to complete a Financial Assistance Application (available in multiple languages), which includes information relating to household income, assets and family size.

We’re committed to working with our patients to establish an appropriate payment plan based on the amount due and the patient’s financial status.

Amount Generally Billed Discount: Washington Division

Note: If the discount is less than our uninsured discount, patients will be given the greater of the two discounts available.

Self-pay Patient Discount—CHI Franciscan/Franciscan Medical Group

To ensure community-wide access to its services, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health provides the same average price discount to self-pay patients as it gives to commercial insurance companies. “Self-pay” refers to patients who have the ability to pay for hospital services but lack medical insurance and don’t qualify for financial assistance.

This discount doesn’t apply to established prices for self-pay services that aren’t covered by copays or deductibles for patients with medical insurance.

Currently, CHI Franciscan self-pay patients receive a 60 percent discount on bills for our hospital services. Payment or satisfactory arrangements must be made within 60 days. Franciscan Medical Group patients receive a 55 percent discount when paying in full at the time of service and a 37 percent discount if unable to pay in ful at the time of service

Self-pay Discount—Virginia Mason Medical Center

Patients without health insurance are eligible for a 35 percent discount on certain medically necessary hospital and/or clinic services. This policy doesn’t apply to established prices for self-pay services that aren’t covered by co-payments, co-insurance, deductible, pre-payment or packaged services, which already reflect any required discount.
