VMFH Hospitals Recognized as “Best-In-State” by Newsweek

Newsweek magazine has named  three Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) hospitals among America’s Best-in-State Hospitals and the top 15 hospitals in Washington state. Virginia Mason Medical Center earned the No. 2 position, St. Joseph Medical Center No. 11, and St. Anthony Hospital ranked No. 15 on the list.

“For over 100 years, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health has proudly served the Puget Sound region with a commitment to high-quality, compassionate care,” noted Dr. Hans Cassagnol, Chief Medical Officer. “Recognitions such as this are a testament to the dedication of every team member and the important role every person plays in our communities. We are proud and honored to be recognized by Newsweek.”

This esteemed recognition, a partnership between Newsweek and global data intelligence firm Statista, highlights 800 leading hospitals across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Only 15 hospitals were recognized in Washington state.

The 2025 “Best-in-State” ranking methodology featured expanded hospital quality metrics, broader accreditation coverage, integration of prior-year expert recommendations and a stronger emphasis on care quality and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures. The primary four data pillars include:

  1. Hospital quality metrics drawn from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Medicare Fee-for-Service claims sourced from Arcadia, the American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals Database and accreditation data from recognized bodies.

  2. Hospital reputation survey results from medical professionals.

  3. Patient experience survey conducted by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems.

  4. Newsweek and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation survey.

With a consistent track record of high-quality outcomes, VMFH continues to be recognized by such organizations as U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, CMS, Leapfrog, among others. VMFH is home to hundreds of top doctors, as recognized by Seattle Magazine and Seattle Met magazine. VMFH is home to the Virginia Mason Production System, which empowers every team member to drive continuous improvement of its processes to prioritize patient-centric care and enhance quality and safety goals.
