Residency Requirements and Criteria for Selection of CPE Residents

Education

Completion of or significant progress toward a Master’s Degree (MDiv or MA in Theology or equivalent degree in other related disciplines) from an accredited college, university, theological seminary or institute.

Licensure/ordination

Formal connection to a recognized faith/spiritual group is preferred.

Experience

Preference is given to those who have successfully completed one unit of ACPE Certified CPE.

  • Motivation for a professional career in the field of spiritual care
  • A proficient talent for providing spiritual care
  • Rooted in a spiritual/religious tradition which informs how one relates to and understands self and others
  • Practical mastery of basic theological/spiritual concepts and language
  • Ability to successfully use the action-reflection model of learning to meet goals
  • Willingness to learn from others
  • Ability to discern one’s emotions, strengths and weaknesses as a care provider, and willingness to explore how one might impact others
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with professional colleagues
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • International applicants must have a Visa to be accepted into the program

How to apply

Acceptance in the program requires the following:

  • Submission of the standard ACPE application
  • A $25 application fee, non-refundable
  • An interview with a Certified Educator (to be scheduled)
  • Payment of $200 deposit upon mutual acceptance, to be applied toward tuition
  • Successful completion of background check, immunizations, adherence to tobacco-free policy, and Franciscan Volunteer Orientation

International students

International students should apply to the ACPE accredited Center of their choice. Once accepted, the student should contact the ACPE national office (email: [email protected]) to apply for a visa. The visa process can take from six to nine months to complete. The visa must be obtained before you can begin ACPE certified CPE.
